What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is a mobile payment platform from Apple Inc. It allows users to pay in the iOS app, on the web, and in person. The platform is supported on Apple devices such as  Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The payment method usually digitizes and can replace debit, credit, or debit card chip and PIN transactions at a point-of-sale terminal with a contactless capability.

Interestingly, the platform does not need Apple Pay-specific contactless payment terminals since it can work with any merchant with contactless payments. For your information, Apple Pay is one of the most secure payment platforms since it has two-factor authentications through Touch ID, PIN,  Face ID, or passcode. Again, when paying in person, devices communicate wirelessly with the point-of-sale systems using Near Field Communication (NFC).

Apple Pay also allows users to ride some public transport networks and pay through linked credit/debit cards or dedicated travel cards such as the Chicago Transit Authority’s Ventra, JR East’s Suica, the San Francisco Bay Area’s Clipper, and Hong Kong’s Octopus Card.

Does Walmart accept Apple Pay?

Unfortunately, Walmart does not accept Apple Pay at any of its stores. However, customers can still use their iPhones to buy items through Walmart Pay. Again, there is no possibility that Walmart will accept Apple Pay in the future.

One of the reasons why Walmart has not embraced the Apple Pay payment method is because it uses MCX’s mobile payment system through Walmart Pay to avoid the 2% credit card fee charged on Apple Pay. Moreover, accepting Apple Pay would mean introducing a competitor to Walmart Pay. They already have PayPal and Affirm on board, which is enough.

However, there is not much harm to the business since most people using PayPal also have credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal accounts. Therefore, they still retain their customers.
